What Options Does Iran Have Now?
As the Israel-Iran conflict escalates, Iran faces a very limited and difficult set of options:
- Military Response: Iran is pressured to respond militarily to maintain domestic credibility and "save face." However, Israel's defenses are strong, and Iran is unlikely to inflict significant internal damage to force Israel to halt its bombing campaign.
- Diplomatic Channels: Iran can attempt to use diplomatic efforts, but it has few allies willing or able to exert meaningful pressure on Israel. Israel has shown little regard for international opinion when pursuing its military objectives.
- Strategic Patience: Iran’s most realistic course might be to "ride it out," enduring the current attacks while inflicting as much damage as possible to maintain domestic support.
- Future Considerations: After the bombing stops, Iran may reassess and develop a new defense strategy, potentially including pursuit of an actual nuclear weapon, which poses serious regional and global concerns.
