Google Pay Launches in Bangladesh

Google Pay Officially Launched in Bangladesh

Google Pay Launch in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has officially welcomed Google Pay, marking a major step forward in the country’s digital payment ecosystem. In collaboration with City Bank and global payment giants Mastercard and Visa, Google introduced its digital wallet service—widely known as Google Pay—enabling contactless payment for Bangladeshi users.

Through this service, City Bank customers can now link their Mastercard or Visa credit/debit cards to Google Wallet and use Google Pay to make seamless contactless (NFC) transactions using their Android devices. Whether shopping locally or traveling abroad, users can simply tap their phones at compatible POS terminals to complete payments securely and quickly.

Enhanced Security and Convenience

The technology employs advanced encryption protocols to protect users' data, eliminating the need to carry physical cards. From air travel to daily shopping, Google Pay brings a hassle-free, modern payment experience to users in Bangladesh.

Launch Event Highlights

The official launch event was held at The Westin, Gulshan, where Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur inaugurated the service. U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Tracy Ann Jacobson and City Bank Vice Chairman Hossain Khaled also attended the ceremony.

Speaking at the event, the Governor welcomed Google Pay and expressed optimism about Bangladesh's position as a reliable destination for both local and foreign investors. “We believe foreign companies won’t just come to take money away from Bangladesh; instead, their presence can help us build capabilities to lead in future global ventures,” he said.

Financial Inclusion & Digital Future

Governor Mansur highlighted Google Pay as a vital step toward financial inclusion. He emphasized the need for banks to engage with educational institutions to bring every citizen into the financial system. He also noted ongoing reforms to reduce non-performing loans and restore discipline in the banking sector.

On inflation, the Governor reaffirmed Bangladesh Bank’s focus on reducing the rate below 5%.

Industry Leaders’ Remarks

City Bank CEO Masrur Arefin expressed pride in the partnership, calling it a reflection of their commitment to building a future-ready digital payment ecosystem in Bangladesh.

Also present were Shammi Quddus, Group Product Manager at Google Payments, Syed Mohammad Kamal, Country Manager of Mastercard Bangladesh, and Sabbir Ahmed, Country Manager of Visa Bangladesh, all expressing excitement about the collaboration.
