Maitreyi Ramakrishnan & Justin H. Min Talk About Netflix’s First Animated K-Drama ‘Lost in Starlight’
Netflix’s new animated Korean drama, Lost in Starlight, features Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Justin H. Min in the lead roles. Set in the future, the story follows Nan-young, a brilliant astronaut preparing for a Mars mission that took her mother’s life years ago. Her life gets complicated when she falls in love with a kind musician named Jay.
This unique sci-fi romance has received critical acclaim and currently holds a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In a recent interview, Maitreyi and Justin shared their experiences voicing the English dub and why the story resonated deeply with them.
A Unique Voice Acting Experience
Maitreyi Ramakrishnan said, “I’ve done voice acting before, but this was very different. I had to pay close attention to keeping the mood and emotions of the original Korean version.” Justin H. Min added, “This was my first time dubbing. Respecting the original actors and direction was very important, especially because the animation and lip movements were already set.”
A Heartfelt Love Story
The romance between Nan-young and Jay is built on genuine emotions, with both characters pursuing their dreams while falling in love. Justin said, “I connected with how two people try to balance love and their personal goals.”
Although the actors recorded separately due to the animated format, Maitreyi shared, “I listened to Justin’s full track before recording, which helped me bring authenticity to my performance.”
Simple Yet Powerful
Though set in a futuristic world, the story remains simple and relatable. Maitreyi said, “It’s about two good people trying to do good by each other while figuring out their own paths. That’s a story anyone can connect with.”
Justin added, “As a Korean-American, this project felt very personal to me. It’s a connection I don’t often get with many projects here in the States.”
Music: A Key Element
Justin highlighted the importance of music in the film, saying, “Translating Korean lyrics into English while keeping the rhythm was challenging. Thanks to our amazing sound team, the music really shines and is a big part of the story.”
