Starlink Showcases Internet Speeds at Bangladesh Investment Summit
Starlink, the satellite-based internet provider founded by Elon Musk, has officially begun trial operations in Bangladesh. The service was demonstrated on the third day of the Bangladesh Investment Summit 2025, held at the InterContinental Hotel in Dhaka, allowing attendees to experience Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet firsthand.
Although a full-scale launch date hasn't been announced, Starlink began its trial following investment registration approval from the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) on March 29. The company was given 90 working days to initiate operations. However, to begin offering commercial services, it must secure a Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) license from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), which has already approved the licensing process.
Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) facilitated the live demonstration at the summit. Despite being routed through a Malaysian International Internet Gateway (IIG), the Starlink connection delivered an average speed of around 170 Mbps—even with more than 70 users connected simultaneously to a single standard dish.
Touhidul Islam, Assistant Manager at BSCL, noted, “Over 70 people were connected to a single Starlink home dish at the event. Because we were using a Malaysian IIG, there was a slight drop in speed and latency compared to optimal conditions.”
The demo generated significant buzz among summit participants. While there were some concerns about potential pricing, the overall response was enthusiastic. “I’ve been hyped to try Starlink,” said attendee Shahin, “and I’m excited for the full rollout.”
