First Internet Satellites from Cape Canaveral
Amazon is ready to launch its first set of operational satellites for its new internet service, Project Kuiper, on Wednesday evening from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
The launch will use a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket and is scheduled for a two-hour window starting at 7:00 p.m. ET from Space Launch Complex-41. Currently, there’s a 55% chance of good weather for the launch.
This mission will send 27 satellites into orbit, kicking off Amazon's plan for a total of over 3,200 satellites. Project Kuiper aims to provide high-speed internet access worldwide, especially in areas with little or no service.
In October 2023, Amazon launched two prototype satellites to test its technology. The upcoming satellites will have improved upgrades, including better propulsion systems and advanced solar panels.
To finish building the constellation, Amazon has more than 80 additional launches planned. This comes as Project Kuiper competes with SpaceX’s Starlink, which already has over 7,000 satellites in space.
There are concerns about space debris and potential effects on stargazing because of the growing number of satellites. Both Amazon and SpaceX are working on ways to reduce their visibility from Earth, like using low-reflectivity coatings.
As the race for satellite internet continues, regulators like the FCC are looking at ways to make the licensing process easier and ensure responsible growth in space. Cape Canaveral also remains a key site for private space companies, including Blue Origin, which is planning future satellite launches.
